I'm a born and bred Mainer, and have lived in this beautiful state most of my life. The picture above is Sea Beach, on the Indian Point Road, Georgetown, Maine.
My interest in criminology stems from an early desire to be a detective. My friend, Ryan and I used to read a kid detective series called "Brains Benton" which was incidentally, a favorite of his fathers. We even went as far as to create mock business cards.
I went to the University of Maine to pursue a degree in education but quickly learned of a concentration in "criminology" within the sociology department. Upon switching majors, I was hooked. From there I went on to the University of Maryland, where I took classes with luminaries in the field, John Laub, Doris MacKenzie, and Ray Paternoster. After a two year stint at a hospital, where I was a research assistant, I went to Northeastern University for my PhD.
I spent a year as a researcher at the Maine Department of Corrections, where I currently serve as a senior research advisor. I'm now an assistant professor of sociology (specializing in criminology) at Bates College.
The latest news is that I'm a (relatively) new father. My son Teddy was born in May of 2015. He's a happy guy for the most part, and enjoys exploring his environment.
