I recently agreed to be a faculty liaison for Bates College football. Being a football, especially college football fan, this sounded like a great opportunity for service. At Bates, which strongly emphasizes community and relationships, each sports team looks for a faculty representative that serves as a link to the team, helps with advising, or is just a person to talk to about non-sports related issues.
I decided to show up for practice yesterday to meet the team. Coach Mark Harriman brought the team together to introduce me, and I said a few words. The players were as polite as could be and welcomed me into the fold. I was impressed later, when one of the Quarterbacks came up to me and expressed his appreciation for my presence, saying in is four years at Bates, he'd never seen a faculty member show up to practice.
I'm really looking forward to getting to know the players and helping out in any way I can.
Go Cats!
