In keeping with his pledge to involve more academics in government positions, President Obama has nominated criminologist Nancy Rodriguez to direct the National Institute of Justice. This follows the directorship of John Laub, another prominent criminologist. Rodriguez is a professor at Arizona State University who specializes in race and crime. Her work has been very influential to my own and has forced me to think about these issues in more nuanced ways.
I'm particularly excited by this news. While I do not know Professor Rodriguez personally, I'm hopeful that her directorship will bring a renewed focus on issues of race and justice, allowing us to better understand inequities in society. Let's hope her nomination is confirmed.
